In the first half of 2020, the corona crisis affected turnover for the Port of Aarhus. A statement of the total freight turnover shows a drop of 5% as compared to last year. In actual figures, the turnover of goods decreased from 4.5 million tons in the first half of 2019 to 4.3 million tons in the corresponding period in 2020.

Thomas Haber Borch (CEO) regards the outcome of the first months of this year as satisfactory, viewed in the light of the corona crisis, but stresses that, whatever the reason, a drop in revenue is always a challenge for a company.

“I am aware that many other companies may currently be facing greater challenges than we are. But I don’t believe we have seen the total aftermath of the corona crisis yet,” says Thomas Haber Borch, who nonetheless sees a positive element in container turnover.

Despite a decrease in overall freight turnover, the Port of Aarhus managed to continue its positive development in the container sector with an impressive increase of 6%. In the first half of the year, the port handled 293,000 TEU (container units), as opposed to 276,000 in 2019. Just about the entire increase was the result of a surge in exports. Import-wise, the increase was minor.

“The fact that, despite a crisis, our increase in container turnover can continue, is of course encouraging. But I won’t get too excited until we see the results of the next six months,” says Thomas Haber Borch.

He is particularly concerned about developments in the bulk sector. Both solid and liquid bulk dropped by about 6% in the first six months of this year.

“I think it will be difficult to make up for that decline during the second half of the year. So, when it comes to bulk turnover, the corona crisis will probably impact the whole of 2020,” says Thomas Haber Borch. He also expects that both the reduced activity of Molslinjen during the corona lockdown and the total absence of cruise lines will affect this year’s results.
