Greenlandic traffic to Aarhus Port

On June 12 for the first time ever in regular service, the Greenlandic shipping company Royal Arctic Line docked in the Port of Aarhus. With this new cooperation the Greenlandic shipping company wish to make it easier to trade with Greenland and for the Port of Aarhus it is at the same time a result of many years of work to get the Greenlandic traffic to Aarhus.

The new cooperation has been made possible by Royal Arctic Line having entered into an agreement of joint service with the Icelandic shipping company Eimskip, which already has several routes to Aarhus. The two shipping companies have together invested in three brand new container ships. They will be sailing each week on a regular basis in the Scandinavian and North Atlantic area.

CEO Thomas Haber Borch points to the fact that the new cooperation suddenly connects Greenland to most of the world markets because of the fine meshed transport grid of the Port of Aarhus. The export from Greenland will be accommodated by having far more possibilities via Aarhus for the products they can send directly out with the many connections the Port of Aarhus can offer. In addition, there are good government facilities to deal with goods for reexport and transit in Aarhus and it creates possibilities for more direct export from Greenland.

”We have been looking forward to wishing Royal Arctic Line welcome to Aarhus. And we will endeavour to give the shipping company a positive experience by being customer in one of Europe’s most efficient container ports where we will service them with some of the world’s largest container cranes. It is a big step for the Port of Aarhus, and I hope it will be perceived as the right step for the whole of Greenland,” says Thomas Haber Borch.

In addition to the Port of Aarhus having many connections with the world, Royal Arctic Line has emphasized that the location of Aarhus will give more optimal transport logistics on land and that better warehouse facilities will reduce costs. Greenland has historically speaking been tied to very long agreements of docking in one and the same port. With this new setup there are possibilities to have a more flexible approach to suppliers and operators and thereby increase competition.

”We in the Port of Aarhus do not need exclusivity. We are fine with having deserved to be the chosen port and therefore we have no need to function as a new basic port for the Greenlandic traffic,” Thomas Haber Borch states.
