Danish ex-minister in Norwegian flag debate
The Danish MP and former Minister of Transport, Magnus Heuniche fears that a domino effect will happen if the Norwegian government adopts a law that enables Color Line to re-flag their Kiel-ferries to NIS. The Danish politician comments on the debate in the Norwegian newspaper Klassekampen.
“More and more actors in the North now fear a domino effect as result of a Norwegian decision that will destroy, what until now, has been a good job market with Nordic salaries- and working conditions”, writes Heuniche from the Social Democrats, the Labor Party’s Danish sister party.
The written comments by Magnus Heuniche and Norwegian politician Geir (Sp) are titled “Ødelegger for hele Norden".
Heuniche points out that Fjord Line, DFDS, and unions across the entire Nordic region disagree with the decision. Danish and Swedish union members have attended previous demonstrations against the proposal in Oslo
The Norwegian government seeks to change the regulation, which will allow Color Line to re-flag their ferries on the Oslo Kile route to Norwegian International Ship Register (NIS). This change could entail the loss of 700 seamen’s jobs, as NIS ships are have the opportunity of hiring foreign labor for a cheaper hire.
The debate has been going on for several years. It is expected the Norwegian governments proposal will fall under the government budget, which will be presented Monday next week.
