Danish frigate will support French carrier
Next week, Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen will report to France’s president Emmanuel Macron that the government wishes to send a Danish frigate to a French carrier battle group in the spring of 2019 . This action is part of the Danish- French safety political cooperation, which France invited Denmark to participate in.
"It is good for the Royal Danish Navy to send a frigate to a French carrier battle group. It helps develop our own capabilities and strengthens our cooperation with the French navy defence. By participating we are better prepared to handle threats made against European security. At the same time there is also considered a pad on the back to the skilled people in the Royal Danish Navy, that the French side have invited us to join the carrier battle group, "says Defence Minister Claus Hjort Frederiksen.
The frigate is expected to be sent away for 3-4 months in the spring of 2019, and will primarily be located in the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean. The Danish frigate’s main purpose of deploying will be to cooperate with the Frech units as well as the other partners that includes U.S. A and Great Britain.
At the same time, the Danish frigate will be given the mandate to join the overall defence of the carrier battle group. This will help develop the Royal Danish Navy's capabilities and strengthen Danish and French fleet units' ability to enter into cooperative operations.
Prior to the Prime Minister’s announcement, the Government consulted with the Foreign Policy Board on 24 August 2018. Before the plan becomes official, a motion for a resolution will be tabled in the Danish Parliament.
