Scandlines Berlin ferry is back in operation
On Thursday night at 11.45 pm, Scandlines Berlin ferry returned to its ferry route that sails between Gedser and Rostock, after spending three days at Fayard shipyard. The ferry was sent to the shipyard after a period of experiencing vibrations that could not be explained.
Rolls Royce, who manufactured the ships thrusters, sent their technicians onboard the ship in order to see if the thrusters caused the problem. It was then confirmed that there were vibrations coming from the manoeuvring thruster, and thus the ships was send to Fayard shipyard for further expectation. A backup thruster was send immediately to Fayard from Rolls Royce’s warehouse in Norway.
"Tt was obviously not our dream scenario to take a ferry out of operation in the midst of the high season, but safety onboard the ship is always the most important when making such decisions," says Anette Ustrup Svendsen, communications manager at Scandlines.
In Fayard’s dry platform the thruster was removed and the backup thruster was mounted. A quick examination of the dismounted thruster confirmed that it had been damaged to this and that these damages were the cause of the vibrations.
While Berlin was at the shipyard, the sister ship Copenhagen, along with with Rødby-Puttgarden’s four ferries made sure that the many tourists made it across the Baltic Sea.
