Hafnia Tankers has just strengthened its cash balance with sales and leaseback of an LR1 tanker. The Danish owner has sold the oil tanker Hafnia Australia of 75,000 DWT, built in 2010, to a private Japanese ship-owner.

Hafnia has chartered the ship back on a 12-year bareboat deal that includes the option of purchase after four years.

According to Mikael Skov, CEO of Hafnia, the tanker was sold on market conditions and the transactions will have a liquidity effect of 8.7 million USD. The transaction allows the company access to free its cash.

This is the second sale and leaseback deal that Hafnia has closed in recent months. Hafnia Africa, which is also a tanker of 75,000 DWT and built in 2010 was sold to another major private Japanese ship-owner, with a bareboat agreement last November. Fearnley Securities acted as consultant for Hafnia during both transactions.
