Despite a huge potential, it is only a vanishingly small part of the United States power supply, which comes from offshore wind. A new collaboration, which the Minister of energy, supply and climate Lars Chr. Lilleholt has agreed with US Interior Minister Ryan Zinke, might help change.

"It's a huge scoop that we now get a formal collaboration with the Trump Administration on offshore wind. Offshore wind has many advantages for the United States. It is a pure energy form, prices are currently plummeting, there’s high security of supply and a lot of jobs for the wind industry. Offshore wind is the next big thing in renewable energy, and the US may play a key role in managing the process," says Lars Chr. Lilleholt.

US Interior Minister Ryan Zinke and Lars Chr. Lilleholt met yesterday in Washington D.C. to discuss formal cooperation between the US and Denmark on offshore wind. US Interior Minister Zinke is a key figure for renewable energy in the Trump administration, as Zinke is responsible for offshore in the United States.

The cooperation will be about exchanging experiences and knowledge about how the US can expand its energy supply with more offshore turbines, which today are cheaper than ever and increasingly directly competitive with new power plants based on, for example, coal or nuclear power.

During the meeting, Lars Chr. Lilleholt invited Ryan Zinke on official visit to Denmark in 2018. In this way, Lilleholt hopes that he will help give his US ministerial colleague a first impression of the Danish experiences and solutions in the field of offshore wind.

The potential for offshore wind farms across the US coasts is huge, but for the time being, only five wind turbines with a total capacity of 30 MW have been built next to Rhode Island on the east coast of the United States.
