DNV GL introduces digital ship certificates

As the first classification company in the world, DNV GL now introduces digital ship certificates across the entire fleet. The spread of digital certificates will result in significant efficiency benefits for shipping companies, charter companies, authorities and crews.

In recent years, DNV GL has conducted pilot projects with digital certificates to test the solution and obtain acceptance for their use. This has meant that more than 45 flag states now accept DNV GL's solution and have granted the company the opportunity to issue digital certificates on their behalf.

And more permits are on their way, DNV GL wrote in a press release.

"The electronic certificate solution offered by DNV GL has given us a unique advantage in the current market, where the use of digitized, highly efficient solutions plays an important role,” says Morten Nygaard, Fleet Manager at Teekay Offshore, which owns one of the vessels that have been used in pilot trials. The company will introduce the electronic certificates as soon as possible.

DNV GL's customers can easily provide access to certificates to other stakeholders using a temporary code, which can reduce the administrative burden to a minimum.

"Over the past years, we have utilized the digitization to increase the experience for our classification customers," says Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV GL-Maritime.

"The rollout of electronic certificates is a significant step forward in the process of modernizing classification. Electronic certificates will facilitate interaction between the customer and the classification society, give stakeholders across industry value of digitization and provide us with a platform for future improvements," said the head of the department.
