How do you move an iceberg?

The question is becoming increasingly demanding as the oil and gas exploration activity north of Russia increases. It has caused the Russian oil company Rosneft to sponsor a group of scientists a 40-day expedition, investigating ways to move icebergs.

The expedition - Kara Leto-2017 - is the second of its kind. Last year, scientists managed to move an iceberg weighing up to 1 million tons.

Until now, the expedition this year has moved icebergs weighing up to 200,000 tons, the oil company informs.

According to the Arctic and Antarctic Institute, the ability to move icebergs is very important for offshore oil and gas development. During the planning of the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea, Russian workers were challenged by up to 100 icebergs, some of them in more than three million tons.
