The Blue Denmark is Denmark's largest export business and accounts for almost a quarter of total Danish exports. Almost 100,000 people are employed in the Blue Denmark. This is shown in a new report prepared by the Danish Workers' Business Council for the Danish Maritime Authority.

The report shows, among other things, that the Blue Denmark exports for about 250 billion DKK a year, equivalent to 22,4 percent of total exports. From a productivity angle, it is especially the shipping and equipment sectors that are in a positive development.

Both industries were hit hard by the 2009 crisis, but in recent years have recovered the lost and have experienced annual productivity growth on respectively 2,5 and 7,8 percent, which is significantly above productivity growth in the total Danish economy of 1,4 percent annually.

The number of indirectly employed in the Blue Denmark has been increasing in recent years, while the number of directly employed has been slightly weaker. Almost 60,000 people are employed in the Blue Denmark, and including indirect employment in other industries, 94,000 are employed in the Blue Denmark area.

In addition, the report shows that education levels are increasing in the Blue Denmark area. Since 2006 there has been a gradual increase. For example, the number of people with a higher education has increased by 41 percent since 2006. Professional and unskilled students are still the largest educational groups. They account for almost 2/3 of employment in the Blue Denmark.
