DONG has officially launched its new Burbo Bank Extension wind turbine park out of Liverpool. It is the first offshorepark which uses Vestas' enormous V164-8.0 MW wind turbines commercially.

The head of DONG, Henrik Poulsen, was present at the ceremony in Liverpool today, where the giant wind farm was opened. Based on the Vestas V164-8.0 MW turbines, Burbo Bank Extension can produce enough electricity to supply 230,000 homes in the UK.

"Burbo Bank Extension is a good example of the high pace of innovation in the marine wind industry. Less than ten years ago, we installed the first Siemens 3.6 MW wind turbines at Burbo Bank, and since then the wind turbine capacity has more than doubled," says Henrik Poulsen.

And it doesnít stop at the 8 MW. In fact, Vestas has already made a 9 MW version of the V164 turbine. And Henrik Poulsen anticipates a widespread capacity expansion in the coming years.
On Wednesday, he told TV2 News that he expects wind turbines with double capacity compared to the 8 MW turbine will be produced in the mid 2020ís.

Burbo Bank Extension is owned by DONG (50%) together with PKA (25%) and KIRKBI A/S, which is the parent company of the LEGO Group (25%).
