Shipping should be part of Internal Market
The EU Internal Market is a great success and a clear advantage for the Danes, whose wealth according to a new study, is 5 percent higher than it would have been without the Internal Market. But the Internal Market does not include shipping and this should be rectified. The Danish Shipowners' Association now takes action.
"The new figures show that the internal market is obviously a good idea for Denmark. Seen from shipping's point of view, it annoys me that we - despite the large Danish merchant fleet - do not exploit the full potential of the internal market. The captains must still go through a large bureaucracy, when ships sail between European ports. The aim must be to include maritime transport as part of the internal market," says Anne H. Steffensen, Managing Director of the Danish Shipowners' Association.
Danish shipping companies have two thirds of their activity outside the EU so an internal European market only affects part of the activity. Therefore the EU must prioritize free trade with countries outside the EU in the style of the recent agreement with Canada, says Anne H. Steffensen:
"Shipping is Denmark's most globalized profession and entirely dependent on free trade. The EU solves a big and important role on behalf of the entire Danish business community. It is important that binding agreements ensure continued access to distant markets. Therefore we are pleased with the recent agreement between the EU and Canada, and hopes for swift conclusion of the negotiations with Japan and other major countries. "
