Port of Hanstholm reaches milestone
The Port of Hanstholm is in the midst of a comprehensive expansion, which includes building a new entrance at the North East entrance, increasing the water depth, and establishing new hinterlands. The first contracts, regarding the ports hinterland areas, have now been signed and one third of the hinterland areas have been leased.
The expansion of the port is going according to plan, and with the contracts on the first hinterland areas in place, we are starting to get a sense of the contours of the new hinterland area and the activity that will take place on it. We are very satisfied with the positive developments, and we can feel that we are switching gears,” says business developer at the Port of Hanstholm, Rasmus Buchardt Sørensen.
With the contracts in place, one third of the large hinterland area "East", which is a newly acquired area of approximately 135,000 square meters, is now occupied. There are two local companies using the area for activities, and are taking up 40,000 and 4,000 extra square meters respectively.
FF Skagen, a company that produces fish flour and fish oil, has signed a contract regarding the largest hinterland area, and Norwegian-owned Egersund Trawl Denmark signed a contract regarding the smaller area. Both companies already use the port for operations, but want facilities at the upcoming 350 meter long quay, where a 10 meter deep basin will be build which is ideal for large vessels to be unloaded or serviced.
”We have been looking forward to dredging the port for a long time, because we take in large quantities of industrial fish for our production and would like to be able to take in larger ships that catch sand lance and European sprat. By dredging to make our waters deeper, we hope that it will attract more and larger ships, which would give us the chance to increase production. That is why we are building unloading facilities at the new quay, which will be the first project after the acquisition of the area, "says CEO of FF Skagen, Johannes Palsson.
Once the expansion of Port of Hanstholm is finished in 2020, another area of 30.000 square meters will be available at the west entrance in form of a multi terminal with a quay of 140 meters, which is ideal for freight activity.
