Maersk Honam reparations cost 30 mio USD

24-08-2018 10:00:00

Maersk Line has decided to repair the container ship Maersk Honam, which was exposed to severe fire damage after a fire broke out back in March of the coast of Oman. Five crewmembers died during the fire. The reparations will cost more than 30 million dollars.

Aside from the loss of five lives, the fire had severe economic consequences, and the bill in total for damages is expected to amount to 500 million dollars – the equivalent of 3,5 billion Danish kroner.

The 500 million dollars was meant to cover things such as scrapping the ship and the salvage mission. The bill will be approximately 70 million dollars now that the ship is being repaired instead of scrapped.

The decision to repair the ship is based on the fact that the engine room, the engines and the remaining operating systems still are intact.

It has not been decided when the reparation of Maersk Honam will take place, but according to Tradewinds the plan is to cut of the front of the ship, which is wrecked, and replace it with a new front.

Maersk Honam is anchored in Dubai.
