E-ferry Ellen delayed by 3 months

E-ferry Ellen delayed by 3 months

24-07-2018 10:00:00

It will be another three months before the E-ferry Ellen is ready for service. This means that the electricity ferry is expected to sail on the Søby - Fynshav route during the first quarter of 2019 according to the current project plan.

The process of building the e-ferry is close to being completed, though the ferry is missing its battery packs, as the delivery and instillation of 840 modules is still in the works. The special designed battery system involves new design features that will increase safety onboard and extend the life of the batteries. This has resulted in a long list of time demanding tests and improvements which is the cause of the three month delay.

The modules are currently being produced at E-ferry’s partner, Leclanché, and will be delivered in two separate shipments. 420 battery modules are expected to be delivered in one battery compartment in week 38, followed by the remaining 420 battery modules for the second battery compartment due for deliverance in week 49.

Once the battery packs have been delivered and installed, the systems will be commissioned, tested and put in operation, all which will take place over a 3-4 month period. Before the project is completed and Ellen is ready for service, the Ærø ferries will need 6-7 weeks to train their crew in operating the ferry.
