Astor opened the cruise season in Esbjerg
The red carpet was rolled out, and Englandkaj 401 was decorated with flags and flowers, when the year's first cruise ship, MS Astor, on Ascension Day, was came to the port of Esbjerg. The 176m long ship brought 477 passengers plus a crew of 289 on the trip from the German island Herring.
The cruise ship was welcomed with music and passengers could choose amongst bus trips to the city of Ribe, Fanø island, Blåvand and a trip that would take them to see main attractions in the city of Esbjerg.
After the mourning of sightseeing - and before an extra trip to Fanø in the afternoon - cruise passengers returned to the Englandkaj in the city of Odense and had lunch on board Astor. In the middle of the afternoon, they were invited from a street food wagon to taste samples of the West Jutland specialty, bakkuld. The ship departed from the port of Esbjerg at 20 o'clock.
Team leader at the port of Esbjerg, Michael Fries has informed that Astor will be returning to Esbjerg in August, and the following month the city will be met by the cruise ships Berlin and Artania. The last ship, with its 231m and eight passenger tires, has capacity for 1,260 passengers, and is one of the largest that can still make it through the entrance to the port.
Five cruise ships have announced that they will be arriving at the port of Esbjerg, and more may follow. Sales director at the port of Esbjerg, Jesper Bank believes that it a natural thing for the port to open the doors for this vacation driven type of business.
"We put a lot into to being available to cruise ships companies and cruise ship organizers and providing the service needed to make them feel welcome. For us, it is a seasonal business in the summer and we are also ready for cruise ships, that announce their arrival on short notice due to reasons such as bad weather, "says Jesper Bank.
Esbjerg Havn, VisitEsbjerg and Esbjerg City have in cooperation launched a new website in English, cruiseesbjeg.com, which is directed at cruise ship guests who will be arriving at Esbjerg,
