Danish duo launches new bulk-index

A new index that focuses on handysize, suprama and panamax bulk carriers has been launched in Denmark. Behind the new vesselindex.com is maritime consultancy organization Liengaard & Roschmann, established in 2017 by veterans in the bulk field Anders Liengaard and Søren Roschmann.

"Many owners and operators already take use of their own methods in order to measure, identify and compare ships' earnings potential against each other. We offer all these things in one service that creates a common platform for industry, "says Søren Roschmann to Splash.

Anders Liensgaards created the concept during his time in J. Lauritzen og Pacific Basin. Both companies had pools for dry cargo ships and a regular subject of discussion was the ships collective relation in comparison to index.

"The overall idea of a pooling joint venture is that all revenue end up in the same box and are distributed among the partners in relation to how the ships are located in an index. By doing this, all participants have an obvious interest in getting as high a index as possible to maximize their share of revenue. The launch of vesselindex.com will enable pool partners to evaluate their ships from an independent source, which can overcome long discussions with the pool manager, " Anders Liengaard explains, while adding:

"But the index can be used in many other contexts and can be used in relation to chartered vessels, index-related trading, benchmarking of ships within commercial management as well as general performance evaluations."

According to Splash, Vesselindex is the second bulk-index to be introduced following the changes in Baltic Dry Index. The English broking company Howe also recently introduced their own dry cargo-index.

Søren Roschmann and Anders Liengaard both worked in J. Lauritsen in the past. Søren Roschmann worked under the title Head of Technical Department in Lauritzen Bulkers A/S, while Anders Liengaard was Vice President for Handysize Chartering in the company.
