DONG uses battery solution at wind farm

DONG Energy will integrate battery plants in the Burbo Bank offshore wind farm to deliver frequency response. The first wind power and battery hybrid plant of its kind in an offshore wind farm must provide frequency response to stabilize the network frequency at 50 Hz and maintain its power in the main grid.

"I look forward to seeing how DONG Energy's storage solution integrated into an offshore wind farm offers us products that can help us lift daily operational challenges and keep the 50 Hz frequency in the UK power grid," said Richard Smith, responsible for network capacity At National Grid.

Frequency response is a mechanism used by the British system operator, National Grid, to control the stability of the power grid. The network frequency is a continuously changing variable, which must remain close to 50 Hz. If the frequency differs from this limit, it affects everything that is connected to the main grid - from household appliances to power plants.

Combining a battery plant with a wind farm makes it quick and cheaper to obtain frequency support, which will save energy for the electricity consumers. It is expected that the 2 MW battery system, supplied by ABB, is installed this year. The plant will improve the wind farm's performance, which is already 90 MW.

"We are really excited to be able to use battery technology to show how this wind power and battery hybrid plant works. With eight existing wind farms in the UK and four further under construction, we expect to utilize further technological improvements and innovations and ensure that DONG Energy supports stability in electricity systems, as production capacity becomes cleaner and more sustainable,"says Ole KjemsSørensen, Senior Vice President of Partnerships/M&A and Asset Management in DONG Energy.
