Danish software can eliminate black smoke

IMO requirement to remove 75 pct. of NOx emissions from new ships in environmental zones makes it necessary to use new technologies. A newly developed Danish software can prevent ships from developing black smoke by accelerating, thus helping to reduce the NOx in the exhaust.

The new software, developed by PhD student KrænVodder Nielsen, manages the oxygen supply optimally to the engine so that the fuel is combusted optimally. Thus, the so-called EGR technology, which, in general, circulates exhaust in the engine to minimize NOx particulate emissions, works optimally for the benefit of the environment.

KrænVodder Nielsen scrapped the conventional method of developing ship engines with EGR technology that was too complex.

"From there we developed a new management that coordinates recycling and fuel injection without requiring too much tuning of other parts of the system," he says.

KrænVodder Nielsen is now employed at MAN Diesel & Turbo, and will contribute to the final preparation of his software so that it can be implemented on new ship engines by the end of the year.
The environmental zones, where NOx emissions are to be reduced by 75 percent, lies among the North American coasts, and from 2021 the requirement also applies to the North- and Baltic Sea.
