Denmark heading towards cruise record

Denmark heading towards cruise record

03-01-2017 12:00:00

It is becoming increasingly popular to hold your vacation aboard a cruise ship, and Denmark will feel the effects of this in 2017. For the first time ever the total number of cruise tourists expected this year is around 1 million.

"2017 will be the absolute best year for Danish cruise tourism ever. And our great strength in Denmark is a strong collaboration across industries and across the country, which is unique in the international cruise industry," says Claus Bødker, cruise manager at Wonderful Copenhagen, where Cruise Copenhagen Network is anchored.

Five Danish cities are going to set a new record in the number of cruise guests. In addition to Skagen, Aarhus, Aalborg, Fredericia and Copenhagen each getting ready to welcome a record number of tourists by sea, there is progress in all established cruise ports in Denmark in 2017. So the best-ever season is all over Denmark.

Altogether, Denmark will be visited by cruise ships 491 times. In addition, at least 300,000 crew members who will create life and turnover of the Danish ports in the new year are expected. This is shown in figures from the Cruise Copenhagen Network, which brings together the Danish cruise destinations

In 2016, when the total number was 866,000 cruise tourists visiting Denmark, there were an estimated economic impact of cruise tourism around 1,35 billion kroner. Converted to employment, this corresponds to cruise tourism creating jobs for nearly 1,900 Danes last year.

In Copenhagen, the country's largest cruise destination, a new record will be set this year set with a total of 850,000 cruise tourists. This is an increase of 110,000 tourists compared to last year.

At the same time, a study from 2016 shows that cruise tourists are very positive about Copenhagen as a destination. The study corresponds to 94 percent of the guests who were here shortly meant that Copenhagen was equal to - or exceeded their expectations. 97 percent of the cruise tourists who both started and ended their cruise in Copenhagen, and therefore had more time in the city, were very satisfied with the visit.

But ports outside the capital have also had great success and will receive 200,000 visitors in 2017. Apart from Hundested which is still in the initial phase as a cruise destination, there is progress in all Danish cruise destinations in 2017.
