In Frederikshavn an expansion of the port is commencing according to plan, the construction is in fact ahead of schedule. Mikkel Seedorff Sørensen, director of the Port of Frederikshavn, told Maritime Denmark that there is great interest among new and existing customers to establish themselves in the 330,000-square-foot area.

"Until now we have had great weather, so we are ahead of schedule and expect to be ready to establish the outer piers in autumn. The next step is to begin dredging and reclamation within the the outer piers," says Mikkel Seedorff Sørensen, who expects that the building will be completely finished in May 2018.

The new port area will consist of 330,000 square meters hinterland area and 600 meters of quay. In addition, water depth will be increased from 11 to 14 meters.

Mikkel Seedorff Særensen says that there is great interest in the new harbor area among both existing and new customers. In September last year, the harbor entered an agreement with the American company Modern American Recycling, which operates in the dismantling and recycling of oil platforms and ships.

"In addition, there are several agreements of a slightly lesser extent, and we have a lot of dialogue with existing and new customers," says Mikkel Seedorff Sørensen and adds:

"The port has four business areas, ferry, conventional cargo, environment/recycling and maritime service. Apart from the ferry, we have all the other business areas represented in the new area. Furthermore, we are in dialogue with Stena Line and Læsø ferry on the restructuring of the ferry port. So in that sense you could say that all four business areas are represented. "

Frederikshavn expects the new port in itself will create a positive result within a short period of two to three years. On Sunday, August 21 holds Frederikshavn invites people to the building site, so they will have the opportunity to see the construction close by.
