Tyrannical billionaire not shipping magnate

It has long been a widespread belief that the creators of the American cartoon The Simpsons have caricatured the series' most unsympathetic figure - the tyrannical billionaire C. Montgomery Burns – on the Norwegian shipping magnate Fred Olsen.

The similarity between the two is also striking. The same eyes, the same bald head and lanky figure, the giant fortune and tough business method.

But despite the many similarities, it is pure coincidence, says one of the comic creators, Matt Groening. The figure C. Montgomery Burns is made from pure fantasy and any resemblance to Fred Olsen is unintentional.

The assumption that C. Montgomery Burns is modeled after Fred Olsen was otherwise so strong that Fred Olsen reportedly had started to believe in it himself.

At home, there has been some rumors that it was the late shipping magnate Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller who was inspiration for the character C. Montgomery Burns.
